Buffalo Sweat: Coffee Hot Chocolate in a Can!
There are really very few things that are as disgusting to us as sweat. Right? It is more than unpleasant when we come into contact with sweaty people. I’ve got to think that coming into contact with animal sweat would be way worse! Animals are pretty disgusting to begin with, but throw in a layer of salty, sticky, smelly water and you have something from which nightmares are made! Fortunately, Buffalo Sweat is just a name of a delicious stout from Tallgrass Brewing. Buffalo actually don’t sweat, they wallow in mud to regulate their body temperature. No, really! I looked it up! I guess buffalo are kind of like the pigs of the open plains. Giant, hairy, mean pigs.
Alright. Enough talk about sweat. Let’s talk about Buffalo Sweat Oatmeal Cream Stout.
Buffalo Sweat pours a deep, dark brown. It has a very nice, brown halo when the light hits it. There is maybe a half-finger head that reduces very quickly to pretty much nothing. A thin ring of carbonation remains to try to lace the glass, but it falls a little short.
The aroma is something else! There are huge coffee and velvety milk chocolate notes up front. It is kind of like smelling a rich hot chocolate or Cocoa Krispies. (The only other beer I’ve come across that smelled like Cocoa Krispies is Shake Chocolate Porter.) As it warms a little the chocolate aroma morphs into the smell of those no-bake, oatmeal chocolate cookies. (Remember those?) There is also a lot of rich caramel wrapped in some vanilla. All I can really say about the aromas is WOW!
The flavor starts out with big, dark roasted coffee. Quite a bit of bitter, dark chocolate follows. Some dark berries emerge with an oaky and peaty note. Some forest floor dankness rides under everything else. The alcohol makes a small appearance at the back of the palate. The finish is dry, and coffee dominates the aftertaste.
Well done, Tallgrass Brewing! Buffalo Sweat is outstanding! I give it 4.8 out of 5.
Pick this one up if you find it!
