Classic Saison promises good things to come!
Nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee is Blackberry Farm, a luxury hotel and resort. And they seem to have it all. Great food. Spa stuff. Weekend getaways with celebrities. Hiking. Yoga. Just a chance to get away from it all! Now they have added beer brewed in their own brewery to the list of amenities. I’m not sure if Classic Saison is the first offering from their brewery. I think it is, but either way it has actually awaked my interest in visiting.
Classic Saison is one of several different styles brewed at Blackberry Farm. There seems to be a focus on saisons, because they have several different ones. That’s fine by me, though! I love saisons. I am looking forward to trying their other brews, too!
This beer pours a mostly clear, pale gold. A huge head of soft, cotton candy-like foam jumps up very quickly and reduces very slowly. It leaves heavy lacing on the sides of the glass.
The aromas are very fresh and bright. It is very spicy featuring lots of pepper. There is some citrus punch tempered with some bright berries. Grassy notes really get your imagination working. You can just picture a warm, sunny day and walking into a barn full of fresh hay.
The flavors start out as bright and fresh as the aromas. It has that nice saison pepperiness and dryness. There is a big oaky note. Some berries and grass show up about mid-palate. A little bit of pine comes forward right before the alcohol makes a brief appearance. There is just a little bit of funk at the end that leads into the dry and funky aftertaste.
Classic Saison is really good! I give it 4.4 out of 5.
I am definitely interested in trying more as I see them. They are a little on the pricey side, but it seems they may be worth it.
Keep it up, Blackberry folks!
