That’s What He Said!
I would consider myself a fan of 21st Amendment Brewery. I’ve had several beers from them, the two standouts thus far being Monk’s Blood and Hell or High Watermelon, and I get excited when I see their beer now. It wasn’t even a question when I saw He Said Baltic-style Porter. I was getting it!
He Said is actually two different beers, both collaborations between 21st Amendment and Elysian Brewing. There is this one, and a Belgian-style Tripel. (I didn’t care for the tripel, so I decided not to write about it. Can’t win ’em all!) In addition to being a Baltic Porter, the brewers decided to add pumpkin to make one interesting pumpkin beer!
He Said pours an inky black with some brown highlights. A 1-finger head appears and disappears very quickly, leaving behind a thin film floating on the surface. The residual carbonation ring laces the glass thickly at first but doesn’t last long.
There is lots of roasted pumpkin right up front in the aroma. The spices are warm and strong. There is a nice coffee note with some sweet caramel. A really big note of molasses wraps around everything else nicely. Dark fruit tinged with alcohol rises in the back of the nose.
The flavors start out with a lot of charred oak. Some slightly burnt coffee stands next to the oak. There is quite a bit of not-too-sweet dark fruit and roasted pumpkin. A pretty ashy finish continues into the aftertaste. The alcohol is not noticeable in the flavor, but it sneaks up on you and hits pretty hard. It’s best to take this one slow.
He Said Baltic Porter is a great collaboration between 21st Amendment and Elysian. I give it 4.5 out of 5. I think they should continue to explore this partnership in the future! If you see it, get it!
