Wake N Bake is a Monster Beer!
I’ve been a fan of Terrapin beers for a long time now. I was drinking them long before I made the decision to start writing about beer. The Terrapin folks certainly know how to brew a good beer! Wake N Bake is no exception. I’ve been hearing about this stout for a while, but I’ve been so caught up in exploring other beers that I’ve never picked it up. It has been my loss!
Wake N Bake is part of the Terrapin Monster Beer Series. It is a coffee oatmeal imperial stout, and it is delicious! (You know, it seems to me that the goal of this series is to see just how many badass beers they can brew. I don’t think I’ve had one that I haven’t liked. Even the extremely hoppy ones are awesome!)
This stout pours black and thick and has no highlights at all. It has a 1-finger, dark brown head that forms and dissipates pretty quickly. The residual carbonation leaves a medium amount of lacing in the glass.
The aromas start out with lots of dark roasted coffee mixed with dark chocolate. This is quickly followed by a big note of creamy caramel. There is a lot of dark fruit and berries. The alcohol adds a bit of sweetness overall. There is nothing small about these aromas!
A whole lot of strong, bitter coffee kicks off the flavors. There is also some chocolate up front. The oatmeal adds a very creamy mouthfeel. A good bit of caramel balances the coffee bitterness. Dark fruit rises at the back of the palate. The alcohol is prominent but doesn’t overpower. The finish is dry and bitter, and you are left with a deep roasted coffee aftertaste with just a touch of funk.
Wake N Bake is really good! I just wish I hadn’t waited so long to try it! I give it 4.7 out of 5. Go out and get this immediately!
